RAID 1 Recovery – Financial Services Database Corruption

We are thrilled to share a recent success story showcasing our expertise in data recovery. Our commitment to excellence and advanced technology allowed us to successfully recover critical data for one of our valued clients.

Client Information:

  • Industry: Financial Services
  • Location: New York, New York
  • Array Config: RAID 1 (2x 4TB Enterprise SATA HDDs)
  • Total Capacity: 4TB (mirrored)
  • Use Case: Customer database and transaction records
System Specifications:

The client operated a critical database server housing sensitive financial data with the following configuration:

  • Server: Dell PowerEdge R740
  • RAID Controller: Dell PERC H730P
  • Storage Devices: 2x Seagate Exos X16 4TB
  • File System: ext4
  • Database: PostgreSQL 13.x
Failure Incident:

Complex Failure Scenario: Primary drive developed multiple bad sectors while the mirror drive suffered a head crash during rebuild operations, creating a cascading failure that compromised both drives in the RAID 1 array.

The database contained critical financial data including:

  • 2.1TB of customer account data and transaction histories
  • 800GB of real-time market data and trading algorithms
  • 600GB of compliance documentation and audit trails
  • 500GB of system logs and backup metadata
Recovery Methodology:

Phase 1: Immediate Data Stabilization

We created a complete sector-by-sector image of the degraded primary drive before further deterioration occurred, using specialized hardware that could handle bad sectors gracefully.

Phase 2: Cleanroom Recovery

The mirror drive required physical repair in our ISO Class 5 cleanroom facility. We performed head assembly replacement with precision alignment and calibration to enable data extraction from undamaged platter areas.

Phase 3: Database Reconstruction

By comparing data recovered from both drives, we identified areas where the mirror drive’s recovered data could fill gaps left by the primary drive’s bad sectors, then employed PostgreSQL recovery techniques including transaction log replay and index rebuilding.

Recovery Results

  • Data Recovery Success Rate: 99.4% (3.976TB of 4TB)
  • Critical Trading Data: 100% recovery
  • Recovery Timeline: 36 hours for critical data
  • Business Impact: Zero trading disruption

Client Impact:

Regulatory Compliance: The firm met all regulatory reporting deadlines, avoiding potential fines and regulatory scrutiny.

Customer Confidence: Zero customer-facing impact maintained client trust and prevented potential account closures.

Lost Data on Your Storage Device? Act Immediately!

If your are experiencing data loss, DO NOT attempt to force-rebuild RAID, reinitialize drives, or operate the system, as this can lead to irreversible data loss. Power down the device(s) immediately and keep the drives in their original slots/order. Contact our experts.
