RAID 1 Recovery – Small Business Accounting Office

We are thrilled to share a recent success story showcasing our expertise in data recovery. Our commitment to excellence and advanced technology allowed us to successfully recover critical data for one of our valued clients.

Client Information:

  • Industry: Accounting and Finance
  • Location: Jacksonville, Florida
  • Array Config: RAID1 (2 x 6TB Western Digital Red Plus NAS Hard Drives)
  • Total Capacity: 6TB
  • Use Case: File Server
System Specifications:

The client operated a Synology DS220+ NAS Storage with the following specifications:

  • Storage Devices: 2 x 6TB Western Digital Red Plus NAS Hard Drives
  • File System: ext4
  • Primary Data: Financial records, client data and tax documents
Failure Incident:

The client reported that their Synology NAS had become inaccessible. The status light on the front of the NAS was flashing amber, the unit was beeping, and the client was unable to access any of their files. The NAS contained all of the firm’s financial records, client data, and tax documents. The loss of this data would be devastating to the business.

Technical Analysis:

Our engineers received the two hard drives from the client and began a thorough diagnostic process. The analysis revealed a subtle but critical failure:

  • Drive 1: The drive had a firmware issue that was causing it to intermittently drop offline. This was the primary point of failure.
  • Drive 2: The second drive was healthy, but due to the intermittent failure of the first drive, the RAID 1 mirror had become corrupted. The NAS was unable to determine which drive had the most current data, so it took the array offline to prevent further data loss.
Recovery Methodology:
  1. Firmware Repair: The first step was to repair the firmware on the failing drive. Our engineers used specialized tools to flash the drive with a new, stable version of the firmware. This allowed the drive to be recognized and accessed reliably.
  2. Data Comparison: With both drives now stable, our engineers used our proprietary software to perform a block-by-block comparison of the data on the two drives. This allowed us to identify the most current version of each file and create a single, consistent data set.
  3. Data Extraction: Once we had a complete and consistent data set, we extracted the data to a new, healthy drive. We performed a thorough file system check to ensure the integrity of the recovered data.

Recovery Results and Client Impact

We successfully recovered 100% of the client’s data, including all of their financial records, client data, and tax documents. The client was able to restore their NAS and resume their business operations with minimal downtime.

This case study illustrates that even RAID 1, which is designed for redundancy, can fail in unexpected ways. A firmware issue or other subtle problem can cause a RAID 1 array to become corrupted, leading to data loss. TheRAIDSpecialist has the expertise and technology to recover data from all types of RAID failures, including complex RAID 1 scenarios.

Lost Data on Your Storage Device? Act Immediately!

If your are experiencing data loss, DO NOT attempt to force-rebuild RAID, reinitialize drives, or operate the system, as this can lead to irreversible data loss. Power down the device(s) immediately and keep the drives in their original slots/order. Contact our experts.
